Humbly Blooming

Yesterday, I caught the first glimpse of our neighbor’s crocuses in bloom and a green leaf unfurling from the thawing soil in our garden. After a long winter in Idaho, watching these first signs of regeneration is a great lesson in vulnerability, or willingly exposing ourselves to risk and uncertainty. With deep roots, these perennial plants bravely open up to the world, rain, shine, or snow.

Currently, I relate to this metaphor as we support our oldest son’s commitment to college. There are flower petals of new opportunities and a new community. An expanding stem of moving away from home. And, deepening roots of intention, family values and self-awareness.

Amidst this germination of hope and possibility, there is also great uncertainty around our capacity for financial support, his passion for learning, his physical and mental health, and his finding belonging in a new community.

In observing this ecosystem of change and vulnerability, I am called back to my roots of re-generation and stability. Awareness.

Like the innate purity of the sky, deep within there is an unceasing flow of presence that is immaculate and untarnished by the fluctuations and vicissitudes of daily life.  It is here that I tune into the courage of the crocus and allow myself to open to the uncertainty of a new season.

Humbly blooming,
Ryan
